District 5 Coordinator Change

With the sudden passing of Chuck Angel, K4KKH, the position of Coordinator has been filled by Assistant Coordinator Greg Williams, K4HSM.

Greg has been a ham radio operator since 1993 (originally licensed as KE4HSM) and has had a passion for weather most of his life. His father was a weather operator for the US Navy and spent time working at the National Weather Service office in Miami around the time of Hurricane Andrew. Greg worked with several operators as a volunteer Net Control Station that helped get East Tennessee SKYWARN off the ground as a reliable resource for weather information in the area. He credits Dennis “Rocky” Beckner for getting him out of the car trying to “stormchase” in the area and behind the microphone for coordinating weather spotting in a safer location.

Filling the Assistant Coordinator positions are Josh Marler, WX4KXT and Brandon Monroe, KG4QWI.

Josh has had a passion for weather for many years. It all started at the age of 4 when his hometown of Lenoir City was devastated by an EF-3 tornado and 2 weeks later struck by the infamous “Blizzard of ’93”. At the age of 14 he became a certified SKYWARN spotter. In 2010 he took it to the next level by becoming a licensed ham radio operator.  His passion for weather is shown by his Vanity Call sign WX4KXT (Weather 4 KnoXville Tn).  He has worked for various weather groups on the internet and has contributed to news organizations.  He now lives in Maryville literally a stones throw away from former coordinator Jason Roach, KF4VDX (SK).

Brandon has previously served as Coordinator for District 7 East Tennessee / SW Virginia before work commitments brought him into the Knoxville area. He has a vast experience with Skywarn operations including Alternate Net Control Operator for WX4MRX. He served as in public safety as 9-1-1 Dispatcher for 5 years and has been certified by the National Academy with Honors in Advanced Emergency Medical, Fire, and Police Dispatch. Brandon has worked with EMA offices in disaster preparation and response, and hold numerous certifications. Brandon has been an HAM operator for almost 20 years. Brandon first joined Skywarn in 2001.

Please welcome them aboard!

We are still asking for volunteers for Net Control operation for East Tennessee SKYWARN. If you would like to volunteer your time, please email Greg Williams for more information.
